The Oneida legacy
Central New York has been the ancestral homeland of the Oneida Indian Nation since time immemorial. The Nation and our region have a unique shared history that began when Oneida ancestors stood alongside American colonists during the Revolutionary War to become America's First Allies.
In 1794, the Treaty of Canandaigua formally recognized this relationship and the Nation's acknowledged sovereignty over its homelands. This bond endures today and is reflected in the strong partnerships the Nation has forged with local, county, and state governments.
The Oneida Indian Nation today
The Oneida Indian Nation is considered a model for sustainable, diversified, and self-sufficient economic development. Today, its diverse portfolio of enterprises support a wide range of government programs and services for Nation Members that include healthcare, education, cultural preservation, and more.
In addition to its commitment to the revitalization of the Oneida people, the Nation also supports a variety of cultural initiatives for Upstate New York, including educational programs, partnerships with regional hospitals and healthcare organizations, and cultural events that promote the unique shared history shared between the Oneida people, the region, and the United States.
The Oneida Indian Nation—known as the "people of standing stone"—is a federally recognized nation in Central New York. Through the growth and diversification of its enterprises, the Nation has become an engine for economic development and one of the region’s largest employers with more than 5,000 team members.
A sense of mutual respect and mindfulness permeates our culture-in fact, it’s the key to our success.
